Engine cleaner: a preventive maintenance treatment

Despite the omnipresence of electronics used to control engines, an engine remains a "thermal machine" with parts that wear over time due to temperature and mechanical friction.

This leads to engine problems (fouling) that develop without the driver noticing, as they get used to the car's reduced performance. The driver compensates for this loss by accelerating more to maintain the same speed. These functional problems do not always trigger the engine warning light, making them invisible to diagnostic scanners and therefore unreported to the driver during routine maintenance. Maintenance should be adapted to the car's usage, especially for urban driving with a diesel engine.

Everywhere we read or hear about "engine cleaning products" and "engine cleaning additives". At Spheretech, we want to clarify user understanding of these products, as the technology is not simple. Through our videos and technical guides, you will see that our technical training uses the Traditional Chinese Medicine approach, which consists of treating the cause first and then the symptoms.

To illustrate: if a Particulate Filter clogs very quickly, it is not the cause; it is a passive problem, like an ashtray that fills up. The cause is poor combustion, which produces excess particles. Therefore, technically, at Spheretech, we recommend treating the injectors first (the cause), and then the DPF/FAP (Particulate Filter), which is the consequence.

At Spheretech, we love talking about engine lubricants because, as enthusiasts, we love mechanics and engine lubricants are, in importance, what blood represents for the human body.

Automotive lubricants are complex chemical formulas, studied and developed according to manufacturer specifications. However, users wish to improve them further by adding what they call "engine lubricant additives". On the market, you can find:

• Agentes metalizantes which do not metallize anything at all and create oil hyper-oxidation.
• Parafinas cloradas, which are toxic and interact negatively with the additives present in oils.

In summary, on this site you will only find "neutral" anti-wear engine additives, of the "physico-chemical" type, such as graphite or ceramic, which are chemically inert and act in synergy with all oils, without conflicting with chemical additives.

Current injection systems are more efficient (less polluting, lower fuel consumption), but more susceptible to fouling due to their very tight operating clearances. Five microns of deposits on an injector result in a 25% reduction in fuel flow, which the driver compensates by accelerating more to maintain the same speed.

Two product ranges are available for engine cleaning, depending on fuel type:

• Diesel — for cleaning and protection of injectors, turbos, catalytic converters and particulate filters (DPF/FAP).
• Gasolina e E85 — for cleaning and protection of carburettors, injectors, high-pressure pumps, valves, catalytic converters and particulate filters (GPF).

Current diesel injection systems are highly efficient but more susceptible to deposit formation. Furthermore, the resulting poor combustion leads to widespread deposit formation in the engine (turbocharger, EGR valve, DPF/FAP, intake manifold). Spheretech has exclusive specialized knowledge in measuring and understanding the cleaning efficiency requirements of diesel engine additives.

Current petrol injection systems are highly efficient but more susceptible to fouling. Furthermore, the resulting flow losses lead to excessively lean combustion, generating NOx and excessive temperatures that can damage the lambda probe, valves and even the catalytic converter.

Whether for environmental concerns or the desire to save on fuel, many drivers use super ethanol E85, with or without a conversion kit. Petrol injection systems are highly efficient, but inadequate for E85, a "solvent fuel" that significantly increases injector and pump wear.
